Youth Leadership Advisors

A key element of the Youth Leadership program is the student’s community service project. Students are divided into small teams (about six to seven), where they select an agency to work with, and develop a project to execute by the end of the program year. The advisors' role is to guide the process and provide insight. Roles and Responsibilities of Advisors:

Roles and Responsibilities of Advisors:

  • Meet with project teams each day session approximately from 12pm – 1pm
  • Provide guidance and advice to the students; setting project goals, keeping them focused on the project and helping them keep it realistic and achievable
  • Assist the students to make contacts with related organizations and community leaders
  • Be creative and open-minded
  • Communicate any issues to LB on a regular basis
  • Report on the advisor syllabus after every day session
  • Adhere to project guidelines below

Project Guidelines:

  • Projects must be completed by the April day session
  • Projects should not cost anything to the students. If necessary they can raise funds
  • All students must participate and be engaged – roles will be determined at beginning sessions
  • Documentation of progress (photos, videos, notes etc.) is required as they will be sharing their project to their classmates at May session

Additional Information:

  • Advisors must commit to the program and work as a team – at least one advisor from each team group needs to be at each day session
  • Each team consists of three adult advisors and one student advisor
  • Additional meetings may be held if you are willing and available
  • Transportation of students to or from any additional meetings or related activity is not required and is at your discretion
  • All materials will be provided to the group by Leadership Buffalo
  • A curriculum/syllabus will act as a guide for each day session, please follow according and make any notes necessary

Please Note:

  • Advisor commitment is to attend each day session and the project day
  • An advisor meeting prior to the first day session will be held to go over the roles/responsibilities
