Connecting Conversations: Diversity, Inclusion & Equity in Healthcare
Leadership Buffalo participated in the Black Gems Dive In podcast’s inaugural live episode hosted by Ekua Aidoo and Kendra Brim. The pair discussed health equity and health disparities in communities of color.
As Ekua and Kendra discussed these disparities, they talked about how challenging it is for communities of color to advocate for their health. A lack of trust exists between patients of color and their healthcare providers. The two ladies referenced Serena Williams who has stated that doctors don’t listen to black women which makes seeking and receiving proper healthcare more challenging.
Our current health crisis has made the challenges of our healthcare system even more apparent. Life expectancy can often be deduced based on one’s zip code and subsequent access to health services. We see this in our Buffalo community as the East Side of Buffalo was hit harder by COVID-19. Ekua and Kendra discussed other aspects of the pandemic and what they think the lasting effects on our healthcare system will be.
